Useful ways to motivate your child to read.
Why is it so important for children to learn to read? Every child needs to learn to read. It helps with the development of the brain, broadens their imagination, and helps them learn vocabulary and good communication skills. Reading opens the door to new adventures.
- Read to your child often. Use this time to help engage in conversation. Talk about the book, the author, illustrator. Ask open-ended questions, “What do you think the book will be about?” “Who is the main character in the book? “Where does the book take place?” “Why do you think the author chose that title?”
- Show your child the importance of print. As you read use your index finger and point to each word so they can follow along with you. This shows the child that printed words have meaning.
- Read rhyming books, and sing songs. Repetition helps your child hear different patterns in words.
- Be a good model. Let your child see how much you love to read and how important it is to always be learning something new.
- Visit a local library or bookstore. Let them pick out a book they might enjoy.
- Create a quiet area for the child to read. Make the place as inviting as possible. Provide a bookshelf with lots of books. You can even build an area in their room with blankets placed under a chair, or a tent with lights.
- Encourage reading. Ask your child for their assistance when you are in the kitchen by reading a recipe or by helping a grown-up build something as they read the directions. This makes for great bonding time.
- Limit the time they watch television. Designate at least 10 minutes a day for reading.
- For infants, read aloud to them. It doesn’t matter what you read as long as they can hear your voice. This will develop language skills and help them learn how to use expressions in their voice.
- Have a variety of books in your home. Use different genres, for example, fiction, nonfiction, adventure, fairytales, Bible lessons, science, history, and autobiographies. Don’t forget to include books that spark their interest.
- Have writing material ready. Ask your child to draw their favorite part of the story. It helps with memorization and vocabulary. Let them explain what the character is doing.
Reading opens so many opportunities for your child. Reading is the key to a lifelong learning process, and if you can generate a love of reading for your child at an early age, then you will have a child who will always value books and a love for learning.
